How to Install Crown Molding: Step-by-Step Video Guide

Mission: Finish installing crown molding throughout the rest of the house (with the nursery already done, we still needed to tackle the guest room, the playroom, and the hallway).

Status: Complete.

Thanks to the magic of the internet, a project that took us about two weeks of intermittent work can be shown in seconds. Here’s how it turned out.

Guest bedroom crown molding

As I mentioned in a previous post about installing crown in Clara’s nursery, that one small project sparked a desire to add crown molding to the other main areas of the house that were oddly missing it. Our master bedroom already had molding, but the other bedrooms did not; one hallway had it while the connecting hallway did not. It felt incomplete.

We ended up installing crown in the guest bedroom (pictured above), Clara’s big-girl room (pictured below)…

…and the recently updated board-and-batten hallway that connects them, which was a helpful finishing touch since it ties into another hallway that already had molding.

Hallway crown molding

The installation took roughly five days of on-and-off work. Once we got comfortable with the process it became less mentally taxing and more physically demanding — holding eight-foot boards overhead for long stretches definitely wore out our arms. Our total cost for all four areas (guest room, nursery, playroom, and hallway) was $218, which included a pack of nails for the nail gun. That averages about $54 per space, though the hallway was cheaper than the larger rooms.

Photos don’t always capture subtle changes, but in person the difference is clear: each room looks more finished and polished, in that “I can’t quite put my finger on it” way. You may have seen much of the molding installed in our recent house tour video before it was painted; we finally got around to painting everything, which meant more time with arms over our heads, but the result was worth it. We used Benjamin Moore Decorator’s White in a semi-gloss finish for a clean, durable look.

Since we already published a detailed photo tutorial on the crown installation process, this time we created a video walkthrough. Videos can make DIY projects feel less intimidating because they show angles and motions that photos or text can’t always convey. In the video we cover every step — from measuring angles and cutting miters to fastening, filling, and caulking — and include tips and tricks we learned along the way. If you’ve been thinking about adding crown molding, this should help you tackle it with confidence.

And for the record: yes, there was an emphatic bird in the background of some outdoor filming. Springtime provides unpredictable sound effects — nature’s own supporting actor.
