3 Fall Nesting Essentials to Transform Your Home This Season

The Inspired Room Fall Nesting - Fall Decorating

It’s hard to believe I’m beginning my tenth fall season as a blogger. Even though the calendar hasn’t officially turned to autumn, I’m excited for the change of season—fall has always been my favorite.

Autumn brings everything I love about being at home.

Living in the Northwest means long, beautiful summers, and I enjoy the light and warmth while they last. Still, toward the end of August I start craving crisp, cool days. I love the sunshine, but there’s something comforting about the return to familiar routines and the cozy rituals that define fall at home.

We had rain and thunder for a couple of days last week, which surprised me a bit since I hadn’t fully shifted into fall mode yet. The sound of rain on the roof prompted me to embrace that cozy feeling—so I began fluffing pillows and bringing out textured blankets.

I tend to keep decorating simple, especially early in the season. Rather than dramatic changes, I prefer a gradual shift that layers in three fall essentials: organic textures, inviting seasonal scents and richer colors.

I add more cozy blankets, pillows and rugs.
I introduce a few deeper hues—a touch of rusty orange that pairs nicely with the blues and grays I live with year-round. Even the unexpected pop of red in the tulips my husband surprised me with feels like a nod to the changing leaves outside.
Natural wood furniture and accessories, woven baskets on the wall and warm metal accents give the rooms the richness I associate with autumn.
I also bring in favorite fall scents to make the house feel even cozier.

Later this month I’ll share a full fall home tour, but until then I’ll show small corners of the house each week as I cozy things up. The exterior brick is being painted white this week—I can already tell I’ll love the fresh look from seeing the primer—and the kitchen renovation starts in a couple of weeks. I’m looking forward to sharing progress on these projects as they unfold.

Happy first week of September!
