Hardwood Floor Installation Guide: Updated Tips and Timeline

Happy Thanksgiving weekend! I hope you’re enjoying shopping, decorating, and plenty of turkey sandwiches. When I last updated you on our hardwood floors, the new wood had been delivered and was acclimating to the house while the crew removed carpet and damaged boards. That preparation felt like an exciting first step.

Last week the installers spent several days fitting our new hickory flooring from Mohawk. It was a hectic week—our car broke down and required an expensive repair, my schedule was packed with meetings, and we had workers at the house for several days straight. Still, the installation crew was professional and efficient, so I could step in and out without worrying about progress. Every time I returned, more of the floor was finished and the space looked better and better.

Watching the transformation unfold was genuinely fun—these new floors are changing the feel of the whole area.

Winston decided to nap right where the crew was working and slept through the activity—clearly in the way, but adorable nonetheless. In the photo you can see holes in the subfloor where the old counters used to be. It’s so satisfying to see those patched and covered; the new floors make the kitchen feel whole again, with no more damage to hide after the remodel.

The photo also shows our still-unfinished kitchen and unpainted cabinets. Yes, the cabinets remain unpainted due to a string of bad experiences with painters—cancellations and unreliable contractors have delayed that final step. I appreciate everyone asking about the kitchen progress; I haven’t posted an “after” yet because there isn’t a complete after to show. The floor installation was the last major element besides painting, so we’re much closer to the finish line now. I promise there will be an “after” post when everything is truly complete.

I’m very pleased with the new floors. Even under remodeling dust, the hickory grain and finish are beautiful. Removing the stained, musty carpet in the adjoining family room to run the wood continuously through the main level opened and brightened the space. Linking the rooms with the same flooring makes the home feel larger and more cohesive. The hickory brings warmth and light in a way that surprised me—it’s amazing how much difference the right flooring makes.

I can’t wait to share the final reveals. It’s been surreal to watch this house come together, and the timing—another last-minute improvement right before the holidays—has made me even more excited about Christmas decorating.

Do you ever tackle remodels right before or during the holidays like I do?

I’m partnering with the “Mohawk Floors Me, as Told by Bloggers” program and received hardwood flooring for this project. As always, my opinions and experiences are my own.
