When we shared this Instagram photo last month, we mentioned it wasn’t a typical everyday snapshot—our caption even noted that both of us had to put on makeup for it.

That image was taken on the set of a photoshoot for Richmond Magazine’s Best & Worst issue. This annual, reader-voted feature highlights local favorites across a wide range of categories, from the sensible (Best New Restaurant) to the quirky (TV Anchor Who Never Ages).
How did we end up in the issue? We were named Best Local Instagram Feed. We were genuinely surprised when they called—seriously, we asked, “are you sure that’s us?” You can read the short write-up about the feature in the magazine.
We were honored to be included, and even more flattered when the magazine asked us to be photographed for the spread. It felt unusual to be shot without our home as the backdrop, but the graphic black-and-white wall created by photographer Matt Licari and set designers Stephanie and Chad Jacobson made a striking stand-in.
The concept was Instagram-themed, so we pretended to take selfies with a phone. In reality the phone belonged to the magazine’s creative director—our phone cases were considered too distracting—so the on-screen image was added later in Photoshop.
Matt kindly sent along some outtakes for us to share. They’re proof that not all my expressions involve a wide-open mouth—though admittedly many do.
We also shot a few frames with Sherry holding the phone, which required me to do an awkward squat. But that’s part of playing model—comfort isn’t really the point.
Thanks to Steve at Richmond Magazine for inviting us, and to photographer Matt Licari for letting us be a little silly in front of his lens. And a big thank-you to everyone who voted for our feed—your support means a lot. As we joked during the shoot, we’re still waiting for whatever comes with the title—a trophy, sash, novelty check, or key to the city. When it arrives, you can bet we’ll Instagram a photo of it.
