Tabletop & Mini-Container Gardens
You’ve probably noticed I prefer quick, uncomplicated DIY projects. I like the process to be enjoyable and the finished result to be ready fast. Long, fiddly projects lose my interest, and I much prefer creating something pretty I can use or display right away. If you feel the same, these tiny container gardens are perfect — fast, low-stress, and suitable for small spaces or rental homes where digging in the ground isn’t an option.
Today I’m sharing five of my favorite five-minute mini-gardens.
These little arrangements make me smile every time I see them. I enjoyed making each one without frustration or half-finished pieces left behind. They were all quick, fun, and stress-free — exactly the kind of project I love.

5 Minute Garden Idea #1:
An easy favorite is a small pot filled with Corsican mint — its fragrance is wonderful — topped with a little wire topiary ornament for charm. It’s utterly cute and likely took me two minutes to assemble. If you don’t have a wire topiary, use any small ornament you already own, like a porcelain bird or whimsical critter. The pot I used was from a garden center.

5 Minute Garden Idea #2:
No ornament? No problem. A simple puff of moss — such as spikemoss — planted in a small pot looks fresh and natural without any decoration. This takes less than a minute to arrange and still looks delightful on a tabletop. I used a basic pot from my local garden center.

5 Minute Garden Idea #3
A tiny terrarium is another quick option. I picked up a glass terrarium at a store event, but any glass jar or container will work. Layer small rocks and soil, add a delicate creeping plant (often sold as “stepable” or ground-cover varieties), and tuck in a small decorative piece like a miniature metal chair. It’s an instant miniature landscape that’s lovely indoors or on a shaded porch.

This setup took only a few minutes and creates a sweet focal point. Choose any small creeping plant at your garden store and a tiny accent for personality.

5 Minute Garden Idea #4
A crate garden is rustic and customizable. Use an old wood crate, a tool box, or any shallow container you have on hand. Fill it with a mix of small plants — I combined Corsican mint, sweet woodruff, a few decorative rocks, and a mason jar with a candle for a summery touch. The point is to gather things you find appealing and arrange them without overthinking. It comes together in minutes and looks charming on a patio table or bench.

5 Minute Garden Idea #5
A small fairy garden in a wooden box is whimsical and easy to refresh. I originally made mine last year and updated it this season by adding succulents and a resilient flowering grass called Victor Reiter Sea Thrift. Refreshing this one took only a couple of minutes. Use tiny figurines, succulents, or small perennials — the key is a compact display that you can tweak quickly.

Teacup Garden!

Don’t worry about perfection or having a green thumb. Most of these plants are forgiving if you avoid letting them dry out completely. Keep containers out of direct, hot sun — a shaded porch, an umbrella-shaded table, or a bright window indoors will work. If temperatures spike, bring the arrangements inside near a window. A little moisture and occasional attention will keep them happy, and if one plant doesn’t make it, replacing it is inexpensive and part of the experiment.

These might be “five-minute gardens,” but they can last all summer and beyond. Many of these small plants will return next year. If I can do this, anyone can — so get outside and enjoy some easy gardening!
So, what do you think?
Are you intrigued by these tiny container gardens? They’re whimsical, fun, and simple to make. I hope you enjoy creating your own as much as I enjoyed making mine!
