Do you have a room in your home that becomes your cozy go-to spot for winter? The Snug is my favorite winter retreat. I use it year-round for work, but in colder months I spend most of my time inside, so I made this room extra comfortable and welcoming.
Would I love a fireplace in The Snug? Absolutely. There are always things I’d like to add over time, but a space doesn’t need to be perfect to feel cozy, useful, and inviting right now.
What is a Snug? A snug is a small, comfortable room filled with soft furnishings where one goes to relax and recharge.

We hadn’t planned to decorate this room for Christmas, but a few leftover sprigs of winter greenery found their way in and felt perfect. The result is simple, cozy, and a little festive—exactly what I like.
I’ll keep this post short since many of us are busy with holiday preparations, but I’ll answer a few common questions about The Snug and share more photos to show how we arranged furniture so the room works for everyday life and occasional guests.
I try to include sources throughout and also list them at the end for reference.

If you missed my previous post about this space, it shares the whimsical winter bed and a few other updates. The furniture here is an eclectic mix of pieces we already owned. When we moved into a smaller home, many items had nowhere else to go, but they still felt useful—and they are.

We’ll make adjustments over time, but we wanted to settle in first using what we had. We did add a few new things—a floor lamp, wicker storage trunks, a pleated lampshade, pillow covers, artwork, bedding, and two rugs—to help tie the room together and add warmth and function.

The rattan daybed has been a favorite for years, moving from room to room in past homes. The tufted ottoman, leather loveseat, my mom’s desk, a teal chair, and a rattan bookshelf—found at a flea market years ago—round out the collection. Many of these pieces will look familiar if you’ve followed our moves; we aim to get the most use from what we own.

To make The Snug versatile, we arranged furniture, rugs, and accessories to create purpose zones. The layout supports watching TV, working at a desk, hosting overnight guests, flexible seating for family game and movie nights, and handy storage for bedding and office supplies.

We tested this “use what you have” approach over Thanksgiving and it was a success. The space feels cozy whether I’m working alone or hosting a movie night with a dozen family members. It suits this season of our life well.

Do you have a flexible, multi-purpose room like this? I hope The Snug inspires you to make the most of what you already have. It’s fine to bend design rules if it helps the space work for your family.
I look forward to spending winter here and sharing more updates soon.
