This year we’re keeping Thanksgiving small and intimate, staying home with our little family. With ongoing remodeling around the house, a peaceful week and a good meal together feel extra welcome. We’ll prepare the dinner at my daughter Kylee’s townhouse while our kitchen is still being completed. (Kylee will be sharing one of her favorite salads on the blog this week.)
We’re also excited to bring home our Christmas tree soon. Cutting our own tree is a family tradition we cherish; it’s something we look forward to every year. I suspect many of you are setting up your trees this weekend as well. I started a few simple preparations over the past days to make tree day easier and more fun.
Back in September I signed up for a virtual Christmas house tour with blogger friends on December 7. I was optimistic then that our big projects would be finished — life had other plans, and that’s okay. Our decorating tends to be simple, and only a few rooms are ready to be dressed up this year. I prefer a pared-down approach anyway: it feels relaxed, intentional, and welcoming.
If you’re looking for stress-free ideas, focus on a few key elements: fresh greenery like eucalyptus or seeded garlands, cozy textiles such as velvet or plaid stockings and throws, and simple table accents like cloches or gathered branches. A neutral base with a few textured pieces creates warmth without clutter, and adding a signature item — a vintage sled, dip-dyed stool, or grain-sack stockings — gives your space personality.
Whether you’re trimming a mantel, dressing a staircase, or styling a breakfast nook, stick to a restrained palette and repeat a few materials for cohesion. Natural greens, soft metals, and warm textiles go a long way. Layer string lights for soft illumination, group ornaments in bowls or cloches for visual interest, and use matching stockings to anchor a hearth display.
