How to Hang Oars or Paddles in an X Shape for Wall Display

Hang paddles on the wall

At first glance, hanging oars or paddles in an X shape on a wall might seem straightforward. In practice, though, it takes a little more thought than simply forming an X and leaning them into place. I discovered a simple, low-impact method that requires no visible hardware like brackets or hooks and keeps the paddles secure and visually light. Here’s how I mounted my flea market paddles in an X formation so they sit neatly against the wall without obvious supports.

I refer to them as paddles rather than oars because many people thought they were old butter or cheese paddles, and the technique I used works equally well for either type of piece.

How to Hang Paddles or Oars on a Wall

To start, I secured the first paddle directly to the wall using two Command Strips. These adhesive fastening strips are like a velcro-style sticker and are ideal for lightweight decorative items. I’ve used them for oars before and never had one fall.

For the second paddle, I nailed a small block of wood to the wall where the paddles would cross. The block provides a stable backing so the second paddle sits flush rather than wobbling away from the wall. I attached the second paddle to that block with a Command Strip, which holds it firmly in place while keeping the hardware hidden.

To finish, I anchored the handle end of the second paddle with a single nail driven through the paddle’s existing hole and into the wall. That nail keeps the paddle from shifting forward or rotating. I thought about painting the block to match the wall, but it remains nearly invisible once everything is assembled, so painting wasn’t necessary.

Family Room Rearranging

The paddles add a lot of personality to the family room and create a focal point without overwhelming the space. When I eventually install built-in shelves on either side of the fireplace I plan to relocate the paddles, but for now they feel right where they are.
