Winter Centerpiece Ideas and Family Game Night Guide

We have a cozy winter tradition in our household that has lasted for years. Each cold evening we pull out a wooden board game we call “the marble game.” It’s likely a version of Aggravation (sometimes called Agitation), a straightforward marble-and-dice game that’s easy to learn but rewards a bit of strategy. It’s a perfect way to gather the family away from screens and enjoy some simple, old-fashioned fun.

We began playing together after dinner when our children were very young. Even the littlest ones can join in — they may not grasp every strategic move, but they love rolling the dice and moving marbles alongside mom, dad, or older siblings. Those moments turned into a regular family ritual.

I prefer to leave the wooden board out on the table throughout the winter. Seeing it there is an inviting reminder to play after dinner, and a beautiful wooden game fits naturally into our home decor. For that reason I call it our “use what we have” centerpiece — something decorative that we actually use.

That kind of practical decorating is my favorite: pieces that look good and bring the family together.
