Hello Inspired Room readers! Michaela here. I’m excited to share a simple DIY you can use to brighten a summer gathering: watercolor-dyed cloth napkins. They’re quick, forgiving, and make a big visual impact—perfect for an end-of-summer party or casual wedding reception.
Materials: fabric dye (such as Rit), paint brushes, water, white or off-white cloth napkins, and small bowls to mix each color.

Step 1: Pour a small amount of dye into each bowl and dilute with water to the shade and consistency you want. I mixed teal, blue and purple for a cool, summery palette.

Step 2: Lay a napkin flat and paint broad stripes of color across it, alternating hues as you move down the fabric. For a true watercolor effect, add extra water over some areas to soften and dilute the pigment. This creates lovely, organic blends and soft edges.

Step 3: For variation, try thinner stripes or layered strokes—one thin teal stripe followed by an even thinner blue line adds depth without overpowering the fabric.

Step 4: To enhance the watercolor look, dip a small brush in dye and gently tap it so tiny droplets splatter onto the napkin. These subtle speckles add texture and a hand-painted feel.

Step 5: Allow the napkins to dry completely. Keep in mind that colors will appear more vivid when wet and will lighten as they dry. Once dry, follow the dye manufacturer’s instructions for setting the color if desired.

These napkins are fast to make—on a small scale, each took just a few minutes—so you can easily produce a whole stack for a party. Because each napkin is hand-painted, every guest gets a unique piece, which feels special and festive.
For my end-of-summer gathering I set up a relaxed ice cream bar for friends. The colorful napkins were an easy way to tie the table together and add personality to the setup.

Details: Napkins and coordinating bowls complete the look—select simple tableware that complements your color palette so the hand-dyed napkins remain the focal point.
I hope this easy project inspires colorful entertaining. Whether you’re hosting a casual get-together or a more formal event, these watercolor napkins add a personal, creative touch.
xoxo
