Being that this blog is called The Inspired Room, I enjoy sharing how art can spark ideas for color palettes and room design. Some time ago, the talented Lindsay of Lindsay Letters sent me a beautiful canvas that immediately sparked a plan for a guest room makeover. I fell in love with the piece and decided to design the space around it. The guest room is now mostly — almost — finished. My home evolves slowly, and that’s just how I like to live: gradual, thoughtful change.

The canvas brings back childhood memories for me; I used to sing the hymn featured in the artwork, and the colors feel fresh and delicious, like sherbet. That cheerful palette was just right for the guest room — it inspired the bedding, accents, and the calm, welcoming mood I wanted to create.
I’ve shared part of the room previously — the wall with the bed and built-in bookcases is the most significant side — but the opposite wall remains a little unresolved. We painted a small antique armoire and temporarily can’t get the doors back on, so the full reveal will have to wait until we solve that hiccup. Even the best DIY projects have those imperfect moments.
While the room isn’t completely finished, I wanted to highlight the canvas that started the whole design. It’s been a joy to live with and to use as a daily source of inspiration.

I’ve admired Lindsay’s work for a long time, so it feels special to have one of her pieces in our home. The scale and watercolor texture of the canvas bring softness to the room and read beautifully from the bed.
I’m currently looking for a small bench to tuck beneath the artwork. The room is compact, so the right bench will need to be narrow and simple, but I think it will be the perfect finishing touch. The art sits across from the bed and greets anyone who wakes up there with a bright, hopeful view.

Some days I half want to pretend I’m a guest so I can enjoy the cozy, cheerful atmosphere. It’s a small room but it feels warm and inviting — exactly the feeling I hoped the artwork would help create.

I was happy to discover that Lindsay offers downloadable art as well, with several prints available for free or at a modest price. Downloadable art is a great way to experiment with scale and placement before investing in a larger piece.

Her collection includes many pieces that add color, meaning, and personality to a room. I especially like the smaller prints that can layer with other artwork or stand on their own in a cozy vignette.

Let hope anchor your soul
Have you ever used a piece of artwork as the starting point for a room? Art can be an easy and effective way to pull a scheme together, set a mood, and give a space personality.
