One of the best upgrades we made to our Seattle home five years ago was installing a Trex deck in the backyard. We have zero regrets. I’m excited to share our experience with Trex and how that project changed how we use our outdoor space.
Before the deck, our yard had an old, cracked concrete patio that felt uninspiring and unwelcoming. The surface was unattractive and even a little unsafe, so we rarely used the area.
What made the project possible was discovering that Trex decking can be installed directly over existing concrete. That revelation changed everything for us.

The Trex deck completely transformed our backyard into an extension of our living and dining areas. It quickly became the favorite gathering place for our family during 2020–2021 and beyond.

How do you start a deck project?
A deck project may seem daunting, but it can be straightforward. We worked with Lowe’s to design and install our Trex deck, which made the process smooth and stress-free. If you prefer a DIY approach, there are many helpful tools and guides available online to walk you through design and installation.
The installation was fast enough that we were able to enjoy the new space almost immediately. Furnishing the deck with plants and seating was fun and made it feel like home right away.

Designing a Trex Deck for Your Yard and Lifestyle
One of the best parts of the project was how the design tied new and existing outdoor elements together. We extended the same Trex railing system from the deck to the existing concrete steps, creating a cohesive flow between the kitchen, deck, and yard. The railings helped define the deck as a purposeful, inviting outdoor room while still keeping it open to the garden on three sides.
The railings also provided a subtle sense of enclosure, which made the space feel comfortable whether we were hosting larger gatherings or enjoying a quiet morning coffee. Designing a deck that complements how your family uses the yard makes the space more functional and enjoyable.

The Durability of Trex Composite Deck and Railings
Durability was a major reason we chose Trex composite decking and railings. After several years, the deck has continued to perform and look great. Living in the Pacific Northwest, wood decks can deteriorate quickly from winter weather, creating ongoing maintenance. Trex’s composite materials resist warping, splintering, chipping, and the need for painting, so upkeep is minimal.
Keeping the deck clean has been easy, and we haven’t had to deal with the common issues of traditional wood decking. That means more time enjoying the outdoors—planting flowers, dining al fresco, and spending time with friends and family—instead of maintaining the surface.

When we sold our home, the deck looked as beautiful as the day it was installed. If you’re thinking about a Trex deck, it’s a great time to start so you can enjoy it this season and for many years to come.
We miss our deck and the memories we made there, but we’re excited to include a deck in our new home’s landscaping plans. Keep an eye out for updates on our kitchen and cottage renovations and future backyard projects.
