Do You Suffer from Instagram-Worthy Syndrome? How to Create a Sanctuary

Sixteen years ago I coined a playful term, Magazine Cover-itis, to describe a common experience among people who love design: the urge to recreate picture-perfect rooms at home. That pursuit of beauty can be energizing and uplifting, but it can also tip into perfectionism, comparison, and dissatisfaction when we forget our own priorities.

Seeking inspiration is healthy. It teaches us new ideas and helps us refine our tastes. But inspiration can become harmful when it convinces us that our home must match an unattainable ideal. When that happens, instead of feeling motivated, we end up discouraged or overwhelmed.

Sometimes inspiration sparks a tug-of-war with perfectionism or comparison, and what started as enjoyable can turn into an affliction that doesn’t serve our lives or our homes.

In 2007 we didn’t have Instagram; we had glossy monthly magazines. I loved clipping images and saving them in design notebooks, studying every detail. It was both inspiring and educational. But every so often Magazine Cover-itis would sneak in. I’d obsess over creating a “magazine-worthy” room and lose sight of what mattered to my family and me.

As a mother of three on a limited budget, my home often felt like a cheerful jumble rather than a staged showplace. Looking back, I find it funny—because later homes did appear in my favorite magazines. There’s nothing wrong with creating a beautiful home, and while being featured was an honor I hadn’t anticipated, helping others make their homes into sanctuaries has been the most rewarding part of this journey.

Today, inspiration is always within reach. Ideas pour in from every direction, and that abundance can be both a blessing and a burden.

Gathering ideas can be joyful—until it isn’t. How you search for inspiration and how it makes you feel about your home shapes whether it helps or harms you.

When we chase too many ideas, we can grow overwhelmed or lose clarity about what we truly want. Sometimes inspiration prompts unnecessary purchases, lures us into fleeting trends, or convinces us our home isn’t good enough to share. Unrealistic standards—especially those amplified online—leave many people feeling inadequate.

Too many of us are trying to keep up with expectations for an “Insta-worthy” home at the expense of comfort and authenticity.

For some, the search for design perfection evolves into an even more damaging form of Magazine Cover-itis—Instagram-Worthy-itis.

Social media can intensify feelings of unworthiness. Comparing everyday life to curated images often leads to dissatisfaction that goes far beyond simple design frustration.

What’s the cure for Instagram-Worthy-itis?

I found the same remedy that helped me overcome Magazine Cover-itis: treat your home as a sanctuary rather than a showplace.

A sanctuary is not about perfection or constant presentation. It’s about creating a personal, meaningful, and welcoming space tailored to how you live. That mindset changes the way you make choices and prioritizes comfort, connection, and authenticity over trends and staged perfection.

Does the idea of creating a sanctuary appeal to you?

When I began The Inspired Room, my goal was—and still is—to help people turn their homes into sanctuaries. A sanctuary holds more depth and beauty than any single Instagram square could capture.

A sanctuary is felt, not merely seen. It’s about how you experience your space: the warmth, the hospitality, and the stories reflected in your decor. Your home should mirror the life you build and the items you love, not just what photographs well.

A sanctuary offers refuge from life’s storms. The mood you set—through thoughtful choices, comfort, and hospitality—creates an inviting atmosphere. Recognizing the benefits of a sanctuary and learning how to create one helps counteract comparison, confusion, and dissatisfaction.

Let’s create a sanctuary—together.
