Family Kitchen Remodel: Choosing Hardwood Flooring for a Fresh Look

If you are new here, last June we began a kitchen remodel. The work isn’t finished yet, but we’ve made steady progress. Although the project began somewhat on a whim, it was grounded in a lot of prior thinking about how we wanted to use our space. After nearly four years in this house, we’ve had time to consider what we need and what would improve our everyday life. We’ve been patient to reach this point, and now we’re excited to be approaching the final stages.

Everything we’re updating fits into a larger plan to live more intentionally in our home. We have clear priorities for this season of family life and look for ways the house can support those priorities. From decluttering and rearranging rooms to updating what we can within our budget, this has been an intentional effort to make our home work better for us.

It’s extra special because I’ve always wanted the experience of staying in one house long enough to renovate it from top to bottom. We’ve moved many times over the years, so being able to make long-term changes that reflect our taste and needs is a dream come true. This year we’ve been able to take on projects we only imagined before, and since we don’t plan to move soon, these changes are for our family, not for future buyers.

I still have to pinch myself sometimes — it feels wonderful to see progress.

Our kitchen and family room form one open area, but the original cabinetry projected into the space and the previous flooring segmented the room, making it feel choppy and smaller than necessary. The kitchen layout made it awkward for my daughters and me to work together, and larger gatherings caused bottlenecks in the traffic flow.

Here’s a concise summary of the progress we’ve made so far:

We removed the breakfast bar and the cabinetry that divided the room.

We finished the area above the cabinetry so it no longer collected dust.

We installed new subway tile, a new sink and white quartz countertops.

We added a new range hood and faucet and completed the tile grouting.

We chose a two-tone cabinet color scheme and are awaiting the painter to complete it.

We have an unfinished island that’s ready to be painted and finalized.

We painted the walls in the family room and have plans to finish the trim and refresh the fireplace.

Since my last update we’ve also added new light fixtures and started a pantry makeover. Beyond the family-kitchen area, we’ve been making improvements in other rooms, including our master bedroom, as part of an effort to get the whole house in better shape for our family.

At this stage, completing the flooring in the remaining areas is essential to wrap up this round of projects. Last spring we installed beautiful hardwoods in some rooms, and the transformation was striking. New floors change how a space feels and functionally improve daily life.

Our current floors have taken a beating from pets, daily life and remodeling. They show wear in several spots that we want to address. From the start, our preference has been to have consistent, low-maintenance flooring throughout the main living areas. Our main floor is compact and includes living and dining spaces, the family room and kitchen, a connecting entry hall, my office and a powder room. Rather than break the flow with different materials in each area, we want a cohesive visual transition from the front door to the back of the house.

A few weeks ago Mohawk contacted me about partnering on a flooring project. Their timing was perfect — we were ready to tackle the remaining floor areas, and their support will help us complete this phase. This collaboration lets us finish projects we’ve started and finally achieve the consistent flooring look we’ve wanted.

The partnership with Mohawk is confirmed, and I’m thrilled to move forward. Completing these updates will make the house feel refreshed — like getting a new home without moving. I’ll share more about the flooring choices and progress in upcoming posts and answer any questions you have about the process.
