One of my favorite parts of decorating is embracing the season. Why keep rooms the same year-round when a few simple changes can make them feel fresh? We’re not traveling to a tropical island this summer, but with longer days and sunshine at home, I wanted our bedroom to feel like a small tropical retreat. I picked up a few pieces from Walmart Home that brought color, texture, and personality to the space without breaking the bank.
The items I chose are versatile enough to work in other rooms and seasons, too. Swapping a handful of accessories can completely change a room’s mood, and it’s often an affordable way to refresh your home.

Here are my six favorite tips for decorating a summer bedroom:

1. Decorate with what you love, but be willing to try something new. I swapped a simple white lamp for a floral ceramic lamp with a teal shade. Changing one focal piece added instant character and a cheerful, quirky touch that transformed the bedside area.

After bringing the lamp home, I even spotted a similar style at a higher-priced store. It’s a great reminder that thoughtful shopping can yield stylish finds without overspending. Be open to experimenting—you might discover a new favorite look.

2. It’s okay to make a space pretty now, even if you plan to change it later. I installed a botanical wall art set to brighten a wall that had felt uninspired for a long time. Hanging art made the room feel finished and inviting. Art isn’t forever—you can always swap pieces out later—but don’t wait if something makes you happy now.

3. Add a touch of moody color, even in summer. You don’t have to stick exclusively with light, airy hues. A deeper accent color, like peacock blue on a faux suede pillow, adds contrast and depth while still coordinating with brighter pieces. It’s a subtle way to create visual interest and extend the room’s appeal into autumn.

4. Choose versatile layers. A lightweight white chenille duvet and sham set works as a textured coverlet in summer but can be transformed into a cozy duvet by adding an insert for cooler months. Pieces that adapt to temperature and style changes are smart investments because they keep the room looking intentional all year.

5. Don’t forget texture. A round wicker tray brought an earthy, tactile element to the bedroom. Texture adds warmth and dimension—use woven trays or baskets on dressers, counters, or even as wall decor. Small textured items can elevate a space more than a single large purchase.

6. Look for pillow covers with zippers. Zippered covers make it easy to change the look of a room and to use plump inserts for a fuller appearance. When the season changes, swap inserts or store covers until you want them again—it’s a simple way to refresh styling without replacing entire pillows.
I also loved how the new pillows looked in the living room, where they blended with existing decor while adding a fresh pattern.

Walmart Home offers a wide selection of affordable home accessories that make it easy to refresh a room for summer. Look for versatile pieces that mix texture, color, and functionality so your space feels new without a major overhaul.
