Lately I’ve been thinking about the things I keep around the house. I’m not a minimalist, and I don’t hide that. Some possessions are worthwhile — they add warmth, color, and personality. I enjoy books, art, pattern, and objects that bring a little joy and meaning to everyday life.
I also value breathing room. Empty space helps those pieces stand out, so I avoid overcrowding. But too much emptiness or a complete absence of color can make a home feel sterile. A balanced home should feel lively and creative while still allowing for calm and clarity.
Of course, filling every shelf and surface with unnecessary items leads to clutter and chaos. That’s a step too far. What I prefer is a gentle kind of clutter: a few well-loved things that reflect who I am and make me smile. Not everyone will agree with that approach, and that’s fine — everyone gets to decide how to live with their things.
I’ve been writing a number of pieces about organization and how to manage clutter, and those posts are helping me sort through what I own. They’re helping me identify what’s worth keeping and what should be let go so my home stays free of useless clutter while remaining full of things that matter. I also shared some thoughts on this topic in an article for (in)courage.
