S’mores Night Ideas for a Cozy Summer Gathering

Last week our family enjoyed a staycation to celebrate Father’s Day and my son’s birthday. One evening we turned our backyard firepit into a simple, cozy s’mores night. I love gatherings that are easy to plan yet feel special—so much so I wrote a book about it, Simple Gatherings.

For our s’mores evening we used extendable roasting sticks that were a big hit. They keep hands safely away from the flames and collapse down for compact storage, which makes them a practical staple for future firepit nights.

I also picked up a grilling basket to expand what we can cook over the fire. A basket holds smaller or loose items securely, opening up new possibilities for creative bites and warm treats around the flame. After using it once, I’m already imagining different menus and themed evenings.

Simple tips to plan a memorable s’mores night:

  • Gather supplies ahead of time: graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate, roasting sticks, a grilling basket if you want to broaden your options, and plenty of napkins.
  • Offer mix-and-match fillings so guests can personalize their s’mores. Traditional graham, marshmallow and chocolate is delicious, but you can add berries, bananas, jams, nut butters, caramel, different candies, waffles, cookies or even savory choices like cheese, cured meats, chutneys, crackers and bread for an unexpected twist.
  • If anyone in your group follows a vegan diet, include vegan marshmallows so everyone can join in the fun.
  • Arrange ingredients on a tray with small bowls or plates so items are unwrapped and easy to reach. This keeps the line moving and makes assembly simple for kids and adults alike.
  • Provide a flat surface or table where people can assemble their s’mores, along with plates and utensils if desired.
  • Make sure there’s comfortable seating: chairs, benches or cushions around the firepit create a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Set the mood with music on a portable Bluetooth speaker. Light background music helps create a festive, relaxed vibe without overpowering conversation.
  • String outdoor lights around the seating area for a warm, inviting glow—simple lighting instantly makes the evening feel magical.
