Hello and thank you all for checking in over the weekend. My daughter’s wedding was beautiful — full of thoughtful details and careful coordination. Though the plan was for a simple beach celebration, it still took a lot of planning and creativity. I’m eager to share photos and reflections once I’m back in Portland and have time to gather my thoughts. In the meantime, I wanted to post another observation prompt so we can enjoy a little design-focused conversation while I get settled.
If you’re new to this series, here are some prompts to spark the conversation. You can use these or comment on anything you notice about the room:
- How would you describe this style?
- What mood does the room convey?
- What might the personalities be like of people who live here?
- What stands out first when you look at the photo?
- What subtle details become apparent on closer inspection?
- Look at shapes, textures, colors, proportions, and patterns — what do you notice?
- What lessons can you take from the way this room is arranged or styled?
- How does the architecture influence the space?
- If someone wanted to recreate this look, what key elements should they include?
Enjoy observing, and please share what you notice. Many readers have said they learn a lot by both sharing and reading others’ observations. It’s a great way to expand your design eye.
“Observation” is an ongoing series where we all respond to a photo. There are no right or wrong answers — just share what you see, what resonates, what surprises you, or what teaches you about design.
You don’t have to love the room to learn from it. We’ll look at many different spaces over time, not just one style.
This exercise stretches creativity and helps us view rooms from fresh perspectives.
For more guidance on what to look for, see the explanation post (original source referenced by the series). Have fun observing!
