We’re thrilled to share this cheerful before-and-after reveal: a bright pink makeover for a little girl’s bedroom. While we often work on adult spaces, kids’ rooms are especially fun to design. Even better, this whole transformation was completed on a tight budget—$200 total—using thrift-store finds, a few Ikea pieces, and simple DIY touches. Below are the before photos that show the blank slate we started with.

Olivia is eight and lives in a new build near town. Her mom wanted a playful, personality-filled room that captured her daughter’s fun-loving spirit. The room already had great features—a large picture window and an architectural built-in shelf above the bed—so we focused on adding color, texture, and character without overspending.
Our first thrift-store find was a desk with clean lines and open shelving. It needed some work but had excellent bones, and the $15 price tag sealed the deal.

A coat of oil-based primer and two coats of a punchy pink (Benjamin Moore Milano Red) transformed the desk from drab to delightful. To protect the painted surface and add a modern touch, we had a custom piece of plexiglass cut for the top—an economical way to keep the finish looking fresh.

We paired the desk with a $5 thrift-store chair and used two Ikea magnet boards covered in playful wrapping paper to create inexpensive, magnetic pin-up areas. A $20 Ikea desk lamp introduces more color and pattern, completing the layered, pattern-on-pattern look. Olivia, who loves office supplies, finally has a stylish spot to organize her treasures.

To balance the room and repeat the punchy pink, we painted Olivia’s hand-me-down dresser in the same hue. Placing an inexpensive green Ikea rug in front of it introduced another pop of color and tied into Olivia’s bed skirt and the small sign above her bed.

We softened the windows with easy, breezy grommet curtain panels from Ikea, and hand-upholstered the headboard for added texture and comfort. Swapping the existing duvet for a more graphic, modern pattern finished the room—another budget-friendly Ikea find.

To personalize the space, we displayed several of Olivia’s favorite books—some that even share her name—on the architectural shelf above the bed. Little details like that make the room feel truly hers.

Below is a straightforward breakdown of the project costs so you can see how the $200 budget was allocated. We rounded prices to the nearest dollar for simplicity and are proud of how far a little thriftiness and creativity can go.
