Redecorating and Reorganizing: Fresh Ideas to Transform Your Space

redecorate and organize

WWe’re in the thick of a major house project right now: new hardwood floors are on the way, and we’re using the opportunity to redecorate and get organized. If you follow me on social media you’ve probably seen the nonstop updates—photos at all hours documenting the chaos and progress. It feels a little crazy, but in a good way.

Since the carpet will be removed to make way for the new floors, we decided to repaint several rooms too. It made sense to do both at once, and I was eager to freshen up the paint anyway.

My new bedroom color is Glidden Polished Grey (I love it), and the family room ceiling is Glidden Wood Smoke (also a favorite). I’ll be sharing more photos and details as each room comes together.

We also decided to paint ceilings while the rooms are emptied out, so the timing works perfectly. Once you commit to one big change, it becomes efficient to tackle everything that pairs well with it.

But before painting and flooring can begin, you have to clear out almost everything in the house. Pantries, cupboards, dressers and shelves all come out to prepare for painting and new floors. The house gets chaotic for a while, but that upheaval is oddly motivating and productive.

As you empty and sort, you naturally decide to put back only the things you truly love, use, and want to keep. That means more space for the pieces that matter, and even room for a few new finds—like items I recently brought home from a HomeGoods preview event in Seattle.

Once the vision for each room starts to form, you feel empowered to let go of things that no longer serve you. You get ruthlessly practical—clearing out items that are worn out, unused, or simply taking up space. It feels liberating.

For example, expired spices and long-forgotten pantry items come out. It’s surprising what accumulates over time, and clearing it feels like a fresh start.

As the overhaul continues, you clean, sort, and organize with a single-minded drive. Nothing stays in place just because it’s always been there. That dinosaur 1980s TV? Out of the house before the new staircase is installed—no sense risking it on fresh wood steps.

This is the perfect time to bid farewell to items you no longer need. Letting go makes room for a calmer, more orderly home that supports daily life rather than cluttering it.

Good-bye, everything.

Stay tuned for updates on these projects, plus seasonal ideas, decorating and organizing tips, and a few summer giveaways.

PS. My blog was moved to its own server this weekend, so things should run smoother and faster now. Expect more posts this week—I’ve got a lot to share.
