Do you enjoy summer entertaining?
I’ve had seasons where backyard parties were a highlight, and other homes where I preferred spending time outdoors more than inside. This year, though, we haven’t done much entertaining in our yard—just a few firepit evenings and a Fourth of July gathering. The truth is our backyard doesn’t yet feel private or cozy enough to host regularly.
We’re hoping to change that over the summer, but progress has been slow. Most of the work so far has been pulling endless weeds so we can even think about adding plants and furnishings. Without a landscaper to call in, the transformation will take time, patience and a lot of elbow grease.

Even so, I love imagining ways to make a porch and yard look beautiful. That first photo with the oversized colorful lanterns really speaks to me—eclectic, unpretentious and full of life. For me, one of the best parts of entertaining is the planning: arranging a warm, festive setting that feels welcoming and thoughtful.
Small touches make a big difference. We picked up simple strands of outdoor lights for the deck because those details set the mood. I’m also smitten with a small serving caddy I spotted—it keeps things organized and presented, which instantly feels more special than piling items on a table.

And why stop at a caddy when a whole serving island outdoors would be amazing? It’s fun to dream about functional, stylish additions that make hosting easier and more enjoyable.
I may not accomplish everything on my backyard wish list this summer—after all, summer is also for slowing down—but the projects we do complete should make the space feel noticeably better. Already I’ve ordered a new outdoor rug and an umbrella for the back deck. With the interior colors of my kitchen and family room settled, I want to bring some of that energy outside so the flow from indoors to outdoors feels seamless.
I’ve also added a few touches to the front deck and will share updates as things come together. Color can change a space dramatically; those bright green cushions in one photo are instantly cheerful and pair beautifully with blue accents.
