As we continue our Best of the Best series focused on bedrooms, it seemed like a good moment to consider the best bedroom color choices. Everyone’s idea of “best” differs — your home, the natural light, your personal taste, mood, architectural details and furnishings all influence the ideal color palette for your bedroom.

Your bedroom should be a retreat from the rest of the house and the outside world. Above all, it should invite you in and make you feel comfortable. Often I notice that elements of a photographed room that appeal to me aren’t always the same things I’d choose in my own space. A photo can inspire, but your room has its own characteristics and constraints.

Your real room has depth, angles, windows, textures and proportions that a photo can’t fully convey. Take time to observe the size of the space, the direction of light, architectural features and existing finishes. What works in your room is what matters most.

When you find inspiration online or in magazines, pick and choose small elements you can adapt to your own space. Your bedroom isn’t just a pretty picture — it should be a place that nurtures and soothes you at the end of a long day.

After studying many inspirational photos, I sometimes turn off the devices and follow what feels right in the room I actually live in. For example, a previous bedroom of mine in gray-blue harmonized beautifully with Hickory floors. My current bedroom is painted a moody charcoal plum — a color I hadn’t expected to choose, but it feels surprisingly cozy in our small room and contrasts well with the rest of our light-filled home. Colors can always change later if you want; the goal is to create a space you truly love.

Below are a variety of pretty and fresh bedroom color schemes to consider. Take a look, note which combinations attract you and think about why they appeal.

Ask yourself what each photo inspires in you and which parts would translate well to your own home. Then stand in your room and imagine the colors that would make it perfect for you.
