Happy Thanksgiving weekend! I hope you’re enjoying time with family, holiday shopping, decorating, and perhaps a few turkey sandwiches. I’m juggling all of the above here. When I last updated you on our hardwood floors, the new wood had been delivered and was acclimating in the house while workers removed old carpet and damaged boards to prepare for installation. That was an exciting step.
Last week the installers spent several days fitting our new hickory flooring from Mohawk. It was one of those hectic weeks where everything seemed to happen at once: our car needed expensive repairs, my schedule was packed with back-to-back meetings, and multiple crews were working at the house. Still, the installers were professional and efficient, which let me step in and out without worrying. Every time I checked in, more progress had been made and the floor was coming together beautifully.
Watching the transformation has been so rewarding. The new floors are already changing the feel of the space.
Winston decided the floor was the perfect napping spot right in the middle of the work zone and slept through the activity, even though he was clearly in the way. In the photo you can see several openings in the subfloor where the old counters used to be. It’s gratifying to see those holes covered and the kitchen starting to look whole again after the remodel.
The photo also shows that the kitchen is still unfinished and the cabinets remain unpainted. I’ve had a string of bad experiences with painters—appointments canceled and other issues—so the cabinet painting has been delayed. Many of you have asked why there hasn’t been a full “after” post yet; the truth is the after isn’t ready. Renovations often move slower than expected, but installing the new floor was the last major step before painting, so we’re very close to the finish line and I promise there will be an after post.
I’m extremely pleased with the new hickory. The grain and finish are beautiful, even beneath the dust of an active remodel. Removing the stained carpeting in the adjoining family room and extending the wood through these main areas has created a cohesive, larger-feeling space. Continuous wood flooring throughout the main level has brightened and warmed the house in a way I hadn’t imagined.
I can’t wait to share the final reveal. It’s hard to believe this is my home and I’m thrilled with how it’s coming together. Doing a last-minute improvement before the holidays is a bit crazy, but having fresh new floors makes me even more excited to decorate for Christmas.
Do you ever tackle big projects like remodeling right before or during the holidays?

I’m participating in the Mohawk “Floors Me, as Told by Bloggers” program and received hardwood flooring as part of this project. As always, all opinions and experiences are my own.
