WWhen we lived in one of our earlier homes, the lilacs in the yard rarely bloomed. Six years ago we moved into this house in the fall, and the following spring felt like a discovery: every new bush and tree burst into bloom. Each one was a small surprise, but the lilacs were the happiest moment — purple, pink and white filling the yard and filling the air with scent.

Each spring the scent of lilacs drifting through the house and yard lifts my spirits. Their blooming season is brief, so I bring bunches indoors whenever I can to enjoy their color and fragrance longer. This year the purples and pinks have finished blooming and the whites are winding down, but I wanted to share these photos before the peonies, hydrangeas and roses take center stage.
