DIY Reclaimed Barrel Lamp with Wire Cage Lampshade

DIY Barrel Lamp-The Inspired RoomThis post was created in a partnership with The Home Depot

II made a lamp! After my first DIY bottle lamp, I found a small vintage wine barrel at a flea market for $14 and knew it would make a perfect base. Inspired by a reclaimed wood lamp project, I set out to transform the little barrel into a unique table lamp.

Isn’t it charming?

Supply list

– Lamp socket and cord (I used a clear cord)
– 5-inch harp
– Small vintage wine barrel (mine is about 9 inches tall)
– Wire hanging plant basket (14-inch diameter)
– Finial
– Wire for securing the shade
– Edison bulb

The build was simple. I drilled a hole in the top of the barrel and fed the cord through an existing hole in the back. Following the instructions that came with the lamp socket, my husband connected the wiring and secured the socket in place.

For a clean, fast attachment I used super glue to secure the socket to the barrel. There are other professional methods for mounting a socket, but this solution has held up well so far.

DIY Wire Lampshade

To create a wire cage lampshade I repurposed a wire hanging plant basket from The Home Depot. I removed the inner liner and the hanging chains, then inverted the basket to make a rustic, industrial-style shade.

I topped the lamp with a small black finial and wrapped a length of wire around the cage and harp to keep the shade stable. The wire is discreet and keeps the shade secure without changing the look.

DIY Cage Lampshade

As a finishing touch I added an Edison bulb. The filament glow plays beautifully with the cage shade and creates a warm, inviting light in the evening.

I think it turned out so cute, don’t you?
