Decorating Your Bedroom

Tips for Creating an Escape from Everyday Life

I’m looking forward to the day I can give my bedroom the attention it deserves. Other projects have kept me busy, but the bedroom should be a restful, personal sanctuary — the place my husband and I can reconnect and unwind at the end of the day.

The master bedroom is often the most private space in the home, yet it deserves careful thought and design. A well-designed bedroom promotes relaxation, restores energy, and becomes a retreat from the stresses of daily life.

A bedroom that feels like an escape can take many forms. There’s no single correct style — what matters most is that you and your partner love the space and find it comforting and rejuvenating.

Q. How do you get started decorating the bedroom of your dreams?

A. Picture a room that would make you feel like you are on a dream vacation.

First steps to imagine the bedroom of your dreams:

  • Close your eyes and picture the hotel or getaway that feels most restorative and romantic to you. Imagine packing your bags for that weekend — where are you going and what does the room look like?
  • Decide on the mood: quaint and charming, luxurious and playful, colorful and joyful, or calm and serene. Think about bedding — a pile of fluffy pillows and a down comforter or a sleek modern bed with clean lines and metallic accents. Consider the location that inspires you: the coast, the city, or somewhere exotic.
  • Use that imagined getaway as a source of design cues. Translate those feelings into elements you can implement at home while working within your space and budget. Make a list of keywords from your “dream escape” to guide choices and keep the design cohesive.
  • Gather inspiration by finding photos of rooms or hotels that match your mood. Collect images that capture the atmosphere you want, then note specific details you like: bedding styles, headboard shapes and materials, wall treatments, pillow arrangements, fabric combinations, paint colors, and lighting.
  • Study those inspiration images in layers. First take in the overall room, then focus on individual elements — how bedding is styled, the headboard’s scale and material, wall decor, layers of texture, and the lighting. Identifying these specifics reveals how rooms are assembled and which elements you want to adapt for your own space.
