Cozy Plaid Throw for Fall in a Coastal Cottage

I’m making a few subtle changes for the season in the keeping room—our cozy living area—and a plaid wool blanket inspired the whole update. The moment I saw it I loved the warm, layered tones; it felt like an instant way to bring a softer, autumnal mood into the space without changing anything major.

The blanket comes in several color options, and while I was drawn to this particular palette, there are other variations that would work equally well. The mix of muted russets, creams, and soft neutrals makes it versatile enough to use now and carry through the colder months.

Because it’s wool, the blanket has a lovely weight and texture—substantial enough for outdoor picnics and cozy evenings, but attractive enough to be draped over a chair, folded on a sofa arm, or tucked into a basket as part of the room’s styling. It’s the sort of piece that functions as both a useful item and a decorative accent.

When I add seasonal touches I aim for subtlety: a few warmer colors, cozy textures, and layered textiles that invite people in. This blanket fits that approach—enough color to suggest fall but neutral enough to remain timeless.

One practical note: attractive seasonal blankets like this often sell out quickly. If you spot a color you love, it’s a good idea to act sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.

I’ve placed mine over our wingback chair for now, and it looked so good I ordered a second one. Having two means I can switch them between chairs, the sofa, or the dining bench depending on the mood or need. I also keep extra throws in a large basket in the living room so they’re both decorative and convenient when someone wants to cuddle up.

A large woven basket works beautifully to store throws and keep the room tidy. It’s a practical way to incorporate texture while keeping blankets within easy reach for chilly evenings or impromptu visits from friends and family.
