Freestanding Kitchen Islands
Do you have a freestanding kitchen island? Before my kitchen “remodel-rearranging” I had a U-shaped layout with a breakfast bar. After removing that bar and opening part of the U, I now have room in the center of the kitchen for an island.
Rather than installing a permanent, built-in island—especially while trying to keep the remodel budget manageable—we chose to use a freestanding island we already owned and update it with a few creative touches. A freestanding island can be a simple, flexible way to add countertop space, storage and character without a major renovation.
Looking through inspirational photos makes it easy to imagine how a piece of furniture can be adapted to serve as a kitchen island. Below is a curated selection of freestanding islands to spark ideas for style, material and DIY possibilities.

This gallery shows a range of ideas: sleek stainless-steel carts, painted islands in bold colors, reclaimed-wood tops, butcher-block surfaces, vintage buffets on legs, and simple stock cabinets adapted as movable workstations. Freestanding islands can be practical solutions for adding prep space, casual dining, or extra storage, and they work well in both small and large kitchens.
