Did you know outdoor fabrics work beautifully on indoor furniture? I’ve recommended Sunbrella for years to friends and clients, but this was the first time I ordered a custom piece for my own home. Sunbrella is durable, easy to clean, and resists fading—qualities that make it ideal for families with children and pets. With Jack, Lily and Bella in the mix, I needed something that could stand up to everyday life without looking tired.
We’d been searching for a new family room chair for a couple of years. For a while we used an IKEA slipcovered chair because it was affordable and available immediately. It did the job for a time, but it wasn’t quite right: the slipcover didn’t clean as well as I wanted, it attracted fuzz, and the chair’s wide, squat profile felt out of scale in the room. We were able to donate it to our church, which felt good, and I resumed my search with a clearer idea of what I wanted.
This time I decided not to settle. I was willing to wait for a custom-upholstered piece if it fit the space and our lifestyle. Since the chair would be used frequently and possibly moved around the house, durable upholstery was a priority. I’d been picturing a wingback to give the corner a cozier, more balanced feel—something with height to anchor the space. I don’t usually shop with a long list of specifics, so narrowing in on a wingback was a fun change.

After looking around, I found a wingback with elegant nailhead detailing from Ballard Designs. The chair’s graceful curves and refined silhouette drew me in, and I loved that it could be ordered in Sunbrella fabric. After some hesitation I called Ballard to place the order. They kindly provided the chair in exchange for sharing it here, which was a pleasant surprise.
It arrived much sooner than I expected, and I was thrilled to see it in the family room. The Canvas Gray Sunbrella fabric and Dove Grey legs look and feel great. The fabric’s performance gives me peace of mind with kids and dogs nearby, and the chair now sits perfectly beside the fireplace, tying the space together.

This chair is destined to be my cozy spot this fall to warm up by the fire—though I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the pups claimed it first.
