Master Bedroom Makeover: New Bed, Rug & Bedding Ideas

This post in partnership with Serena and Lily

We’ve made big progress on our master bedroom makeover. Our new bed, bedding, and rug have arrived, and I’m so happy with how it all looks. You’ll also get a peek at the new shutters in this post; I’ll share more about them another day.

If you’re new here, we moved into our Seattle house about two and a half years ago. The small room designated as our master had yellow walls when we moved in. It was cheerful, but I was excited to paint and make the space cozier.

At first we chose a deep plum color that made the little room feel like a warm cocoon. We loved that feeling—after the long stress of moving and remodeling, it was a comforting retreat for the past two years.

More recently we decided to make the space reflect the rest of the house as we renovated the kitchen top to bottom. The kitchen became the design anchor, and as other rooms come together the whole house feels more cohesive. That change inspired a softer, more relaxed direction for the bedroom.

My mom was ready to have her sleigh bed back, so I finally treated myself to a cane bed from Serena & Lily that I’d been dreaming about for a long time. I love the classic silhouette and cane detail, and it’s the perfect scale for our small bedroom (the room measures 12 x 14).

Our previous bed was pretty but bulky and dark, which took up a lot of visual space. This new bed is much more streamlined, with a straight headboard and footboard that fit the room better. It sits a little higher with dainty legs, which helps the room feel more open because you can see more of the rug underneath.

The footboard height is just right—our pup Lily can stay safely on the bed, and Jack can still hop on or off without risking an awkward leap. It’s an ideal balance of form and function.

The combination of wood, cane, and the blue-and-white palette reflects the direction we’re taking throughout the home: a subtle, clean, relaxed coastal aesthetic that suits our location overlooking Puget Sound.

The bedding has such thoughtful details—patterned shams, fringe on the sheets, stitched quilting, and tassels on the throw. The whimsical Dhurrie rug brings softness and pattern and helps tie the room together. The fitted sheets are deep enough to easily fit our tall mattress, which is a relief.

We’re pleased with the progress so far. There are still a few items on the to-do list—like deciding what to do with the mirrored closet doors—but for now the room feels complete enough to enjoy.

This space is calm, comfortable, and welcoming.

We also installed new plantation shutters, which really finish the room. I’ll share more details about them another time.
