Fall is here, and for someone who loves being at home, the season brings both comfort and a little wistfulness. Shorter days and the knowledge that winter is approaching can feel heavy, especially when gray skies and drizzle become the new normal. Over the years I’ve developed rituals and small decor changes that make these months feel cozy rather than gloomy. One habit in particular has a big, immediate effect on my mood.
We use candles every single day. Not as occasional decor for special events, but as part of our daily rhythm. Placing flameless candles around the rooms I spend the most time in—kitchen counters, living room shelves, bedside tables—transforms the atmosphere. The soft glow shifts the mood from dreary to warm and inviting, making the darker months feel intentional and comfortable.

I don’t rely on scented candles to fill the house. I rarely burn traditional candles because of health concerns and safety—burning many fragranced candles every day can add unwanted chemicals into the air, and there’s always a fire risk. Instead we use unscented, battery-operated candles for the light and rely on diffusers with pure essential oils for scent. This approach lets me enjoy the comforting glow of candles without the drawbacks of smoke or soot.

Colored candles are a favorite. In our previous home we loved matching colored tapers to our wall sconces and decor. There’s no deep symbolism in the hues I choose; it’s simply about adding another layer to the room. Deep, moody colors—rust, amber, blue, seaglass tones—feel especially comforting in autumn and winter. Even plain white votives look cozier when placed in amber or colored glass holders.

The visual impact of candles in a darker home is significant. In rooms that don’t get much natural light, the glow from several small lights changes how the space feels: more inviting, calmer, and intentionally layered. I arrange candles where we do tasks—near the sink or on the kitchen counter while cooking—and scatter them in lounges and reading nooks so the light is always within view.

Using flameless candles daily also solves practical concerns. Battery-operated lights remove the risk of open flames and reduce indoor air pollution. Many realistic options now have a gentle flicker and come in rich seasonal colors that echo autumn’s palette. I place them in holders I love—ceramic, brass, amber glass, and rattan—to enhance the look even when they’re not lit.

Small changes like swapping in colored candles and placing them thoughtfully around the home make the months ahead feel purposeful and cozy. The daily ritual of switching on a few candles signals a shift in the day—it’s a quiet act that helps me lean into the season instead of resisting it.

If you’re looking to refresh your fall and winter decor, consider adding a few battery-operated candles in seasonal colors, amber glass votives, or holders that catch the light beautifully. Place them in clusters on tables, shelves, and counters where the glow can be seen from seating areas. Combine them with a diffuser for scent and soft textiles for warmth, and you’ll have a cozy, intentional atmosphere that carries you through the darker months.
