Decoupage Easter Eggs with Paper Napkins – Spring Craft Tutorial

I have a fun little Easter craft to share with you today.

I actually bought these supplies two years ago planning to make them, and my daughter Courtney and I finally finished the project this week.

If you have Prime, you may still be able to get supplies before Easter. If not, save this idea for next year—or order supplies ahead of time so you’re ready when inspiration strikes.

A quick note: I’m not a DIY professional, but I think these turned out really cute.

Supplies we used

Wooden eggs

Paintbrushes

Assorted printed cocktail napkins (forest animals, blue birds, succulents, pink florals, and similar floral patterns)

Gloss varnish

I gathered everything I used together so it’s easy to find the same materials.

How we did it

  • Separate the napkins so you’re left with only the top printed layer.
  • Tear the napkins into smaller pieces rather than cutting—torn edges blend more naturally.
  • Brush a thin layer of varnish onto the wooden egg.
  • Gently place a piece of napkin on the varnished area, then brush another thin layer of varnish over the napkin to smooth it out.
  • Continue overlapping pieces slightly until the entire egg is covered.

Helpful tips we learned

  • Use less varnish—too much can cause the paper to wrinkle.
  • Work with a light touch so the napkin doesn’t tear while applying varnish.
  • If small wrinkles appear, don’t worry; they can add to the handmade charm.
  • Let the eggs dry on parchment paper—ours stuck a little when we used a plate.
  • Smaller napkin pieces are easier to manipulate around curves.
  • Wear gloves or keep a damp cloth nearby to clean varnish from your fingers.

Ways to display and use your decorated eggs

  • Arrange them in a decorative bowl.
  • Scatter them along a table runner or use them in a centerpiece.
  • Use the eggs as part of place settings for a spring meal.
  • Tuck them into baskets or small spring vignettes around the house.

This is also a great activity to set out for guests—prepare the materials ahead of time and let everyone decorate their own eggs.
