Christmas Mantel Decorating Ideas to Wow Your Guests

Sometimes blogging surprises me — just yesterday I was browsing HGTV.com and, to my surprise, I found photos of rooms from my own house featured in several idea galleries. I had given permission for the images to be used, but seeing my home showcased still makes me do a double take. It’s funny to realize I’m now finding inspiration in my own past work.

Last year I decorated the mantel with lime-green apples, sparkly faux greenery, and shiny blue and silver accents, creating a fresh, pretty look. That arrangement appeared in an HGTV idea book and reflects the decorating principles I use year-round. Here are the tips I follow when styling a holiday mantel.

Mix things up

Mix unexpected elements to create something unique. On my mantel I combined lime-green apples, blue shiny Christmas balls on glass candlesticks, and sparkly faux greenery with a rustic willow wreath, weathered shutters, and black lanterns. Mixing styles and objects — modern with rustic, shiny with natural — often yields the most interesting results. Don’t be afraid to try pairings that aren’t obvious; you’ll be surprised by what works.

Add texture and contrast

Texture and contrast bring depth and warmth to a mantel. In my display the glossy blue ornaments and glittery garland contrast with the rough, natural texture of the willow wreath and twigs. Combining different finishes and materials — matte and shiny, soft and rough — makes the arrangement feel layered and intentional, giving it both timelessness and a fresh, festive sparkle.

Be authentic and meaningful

Personal touches make a mantel feel warm and true to your family. To customize our stockings I tucked antique doilies that belonged to my grandmother around the cuffs. Those doilies added history and sentiment to otherwise simple Pottery Barn quilted stockings. Using cherished items — heirlooms, special ornaments, or family keepsakes — not only personalizes your display but connects you to memories each holiday season.

Have fun being creative

Each year I enjoy trying a new direction. This year my mantel took on a more rustic, woodland look, different from last year’s brighter palette. Exploring new themes keeps decorating exciting and prevents a rut. Let your creativity lead you and don’t hesitate to try something unexpected — even small, unusual touches make a big difference.

I love finding new ways to express my style while staying authentic. Changing the look each year keeps things interesting and fun. Try a fresh combination or add a meaningful piece from your past to make your mantel uniquely yours.
