Do you enjoy cleaning your sink every day? I began refining my housekeeping routines about twenty years ago. After our third child arrived, I had to create a system that fit a busier life. The busier you are, the more important it is to work efficiently. That led me to develop four simple daily habits that make home life smoother and more joyful.
These routines have appeared in various forms on the blog and in my books, but they essentially boil down to four core actions:
Make Your Bed.
Clean Your Sink.
Do Cleaning Frenzies.
Do a Daily Load of Laundry.

I call these domino housekeeping habits because each small action tends to inspire the next. When you complete one of them, you often feel motivated to keep going and do a few more things. Over time these habits turn your house into a welcoming sanctuary you actually want to spend time in. Cleaning frenzies are especially useful because they’re flexible enough to match different days, yet consistent enough that doing them daily makes you feel like you’re winning at life.
Over the coming weeks I’ll dive into the idea behind cleaning frenzies and explore each of these daily routines in more detail, sharing practical tips and why they work for me. As always, take what fits your life and leave what doesn’t.

Cleaning your kitchen sink every day may feel like a small act, but try it for 30 days and you might be surprised by its emotional impact. A simple routine isn’t about being chained to housework; it’s about creating freedom from it, so you can enjoy being at home and doing what matters to you.
Below are practical tips to make daily sink cleaning feel pleasant, efficient, and sustainable.
Think of a clean sink as a gift to yourself.
Avoid calling these tasks “chores.” Caring for your home is a kindness you give yourself. My goal is always to have a clean sink before bed. Whether I do it myself or a family member helps, we all know the house feels better when the sink is clear. It’s especially helpful to empty the sink before dinner—starting the evening with a full sink makes it harder to finish the nightly tidy, while an empty sink lets you breeze through cleanup and reclaim time for yourself.

- Turn on music you enjoy while you clean—music makes the task feel lighter and more pleasant.
- Add decorative touches like seasonal flowers, a pretty dish towel, or a small plant to motivate you to keep the space tidy and attractive.
- Use dishes and glassware you love—cleaning and putting away pretty pieces is more satisfying than letting them pile up.
- Choose gentle, toxin-free cleaning products so you don’t breathe harsh chemicals while you work. If a product label warns you to use gloves or ventilate the area, consider switching to a safer alternative.
- Avoid abrasive or heavily fragranced dish soaps on items that touch food and on your hands. Look for mild, plant-based formulas that clean effectively without unnecessary chemicals.

- Instead of candles or synthetic sprays, use natural plant-based scents like essential oils in a diffuser to make the kitchen smell fresh and inviting while keeping your air cleaner.
- Pour a cup of tea or your favorite drink to enjoy while you work, or as a small reward once the kitchen is clean. Making a beverage part of the ritual turns cleaning into a gentle, restorative practice.
- When you finish, dry and polish the sink. Keeping a small dry cloth nearby makes this step quick. Those finishing touches make your kitchen feel cared for and can brighten your morning.
