I expected my new side courtyard off the kitchen to be finished this spring or at least by early summer. Plans have been delayed, but the fence is scheduled to be installed this week, so there’s renewed hope we’ll be able to use the space before winter. The hold-up has been a bit of a saga — I’ll share the full story another time — but I’m relieved to see progress at last.
While the work wraps up, I’ll be sharing short video updates around the house through Instagram Stories. If you’d like quick behind-the-scenes looks and sneak peeks, feel free to follow along on my Instagram profile. Stories are visible for 24 hours, so check back often to catch new clips. If you haven’t used the Stories feature before, tap my profile photo on Instagram to see any recent videos.
Until the courtyard is ready, I’ll keep dreaming and planning. In the meantime, here are four ideas to create an inviting outdoor space you’ll want to spend time in.
Four ideas for an inviting outdoor space

1. Add decorative elements — mirrors, baskets, and outdoor pillows
Decorative accents instantly make an outdoor area feel finished and welcoming. A weatherproof mirror can enlarge a small yard visually and bring light into shaded corners. Baskets and storage solutions keep cushions and blankets tidy, while outdoor pillows add color, comfort, and a relaxed vibe. Choose fabrics rated for outdoor use to protect from sun and moisture.

2. Create a vertical garden — a ladder garden is a great option
Maximize limited square footage with vertical planting. Ladder-style plant stands, wall-mounted planters, and tiered shelves let you grow herbs, flowers, and small vegetables without taking up much ground space. Vertical gardens add texture and greenery, soften walls or fences, and make a small balcony or courtyard feel lush and inviting.

3. Install a firepit to extend evenings outdoors
A firepit creates instant atmosphere and encourages lingering nights outside. Even a simple, portable firepit can provide warmth, light, and a focal point for gathering. Pair it with comfortable seating and soft lighting to craft a cozy setting for conversations, marshmallow roasting, or relaxed reading on cool evenings. Always follow local codes and safety guidelines when using an open flame.

4. Set up an outdoor dining area
An outdoor dining spot transforms a yard into an extension of your home. Depending on the space, choose a bistro set, a foldable table, or a full dining table with weatherproof chairs. Add layered lighting like string lights or lanterns, a rug to define the area, and a side table for serving. With a few thoughtful touches, outdoor meals become effortless and enjoyable.
My daughter Kylee recently refreshed her very small balcony into a charming little retreat. She’ll share a tour here on the blog this week to show what worked for her compact space. Update: you can see her small balcony makeover showcased in the blog post linked below.
