Hallway Cabinet with Battery-Powered Lights and Removable Wallpaper

I enjoy finding simple, affordable ways to add personality to a room. This past weekend we made two small but impactful updates to our little hallway that completely changed the feel of the space.

The built-in cabinet sits in a compact but frequently used area between our kitchen, bedrooms and other rooms—sort of like a mini butler’s pantry if you want to imagine it that way. It serves a practical role but also offers a great opportunity to add charm.

When we moved in three and a half years ago we considered big, expensive renovations for this hall. Over time we learned that small, thoughtful changes often make the biggest difference. We’ve already refreshed paint on the walls and cabinet, removed the sliding doors, and switched to new black hardware. This weekend we added battery-operated library-style wall sconces and peel-and-stick plank paper on the back of the open shelving to give the cabinet more depth and texture.

Both additions were quick and easy to install, and I’m delighted with how they transformed the space.

I’d been eyeing library-style wall lights for a while, but most are more expensive than I wanted to spend. I found a budget-friendly battery-operated option that was surprisingly affordable, so I ordered a pair to try. They’re dimmable, which helps set a cozy mood in the hall.

When the lights arrived I hesitated—neither the finish nor the size was exactly what I expected. But for the price and the purpose they were worth a shot. They were simple to hang, much like putting up a framed picture, and once in place they provided the warm, layered lighting I had imagined. If you’re unsure about a particular element, try it—stand back and assess the overall effect. Often the complete look is better than any single detail judged alone.

I felt similarly uncertain about the peel-and-stick plank wallpaper, but since it was low risk I decided to try it. Installing the removable paper was easy and instantaneous in its impact—the shelves now feel intentional and finished. The peel-and-stick approach makes it simple to experiment without committing to a permanent change.

For a while the cabinet served as a catch-all, with baskets filling every shelf and hiding clutter. I still love baskets, but I’m enjoying the open shelving now for displaying cookbooks, serving bowls, and a few decorative pieces. The new lighting and plank backdrop give the items more presence and make the cabinet feel curated rather than purely functional.
