Southern Living
In a few days we’ll be moving into November. For many in the United States that means preparing for Thanksgiving, and soon after, the Christmas season will begin. It all comes around so quickly.
Over the years I’ve hosted holiday meals in every kind of space — large dining rooms, tiny eating nooks, and even living rooms with potluck-style setups. The size or style of the room doesn’t determine the quality of the gathering. Whether you’re serving a formal sit-down meal or arranging a buffet on a kitchen island, you can make the occasion memorable. A grand table is lovely, but a simple kitchen table or a small card table can be just as meaningful.
What truly matters is the conversation and the sense of family and community you create around the food. The atmosphere you build—the stories shared, the laughter, the connection—makes the meal special, not the square footage.

One of my favorite holiday meals was a quiet Thanksgiving the night before my sister’s wedding. We didn’t have time for a big, elaborate dinner, so we put together a simple meal: turkey breast, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and cranberries. We squeezed around the smallest dining table in my little English cottage-style house and talked about their future. To make the evening feel special, I dimmed the chandelier and lit candles on the table. The food was simple, but the atmosphere and conversation made that night unforgettable. Even years later, it remains one of my favorite memories.
Sometimes we adjust our traditions to match our current home or season of life. You might not have the perfect dining room or the ideal circumstances, but with a little intention—a warm table, soft lighting, and good company—you can create meaningful holiday moments in any space.
