Now that December is here, I’m ready to bring on the holiday music and settle into cozy mode. After Thanksgiving I’ve been taking it easy in comfy clothes, prepping the house so it feels warm and welcoming for the season.
Here are 4 simple tips to create a cozy winter atmosphere in your home.
1. Plan a baking day to warm the kitchen
The temperatures dropped this week, and the idea of a baking day instantly sounded perfect. I like to imagine snow falling outside the window while I fill the house with the smell of cookies and hot chocolate.

Even when real snow doesn’t appear, the cozy rituals of marshmallows, cocoa, and fresh-baked treats make the season feel special.

When you’re finally prepared for snow, it often doesn’t show up — but that’s okay. A little pretend snow inside, like hanging paper snowflakes, makes the kitchen feel magical.

Jack’s reaction when I suggest skipping a cold walk in favor of staying in to shop and nest is priceless — cozy wins every time!
2. Gather your snow-day essentials
Ambient lighting, candles in lanterns, and soft string lights immediately change the mood of a room. Even without a power outage, these small touches make a snow day feel restful and warm.

3. Focus on creature comforts
Comfort matters most to our dog Jack — warm blankets and a soft spot by the fire beat fancy lighting every time. Between my husband and me, our body temperatures are opposite: I’m usually cold and he’s often warm, so layering is key. Keep extra throws and cozy pillows on hand to make everyone comfortable.

4. Create a favorite cozy spot
Design a small destination in your home where you can linger: a chair by the fire, a game table with warm lighting, or a nook piled with blankets and books. This winter will be our first with the game table, and I can already picture long evenings spent there with candles and board games.
We’re gathering puzzles and games and making sure the space is ready for quiet, cozy nights in — candlelit dinners, relaxed conversations, and plenty of comfort.
