Style Your Bed with Patterned Sheets and Matching Shams

I’m a big fan of making my bed every day. I’ve written about this simple habit in my books and many blog posts because it really improves daily life. Lately I’ve been enjoying my newly refreshed bedroom and, during A Lovely January, I focused on making the space feel like home. A few small changes made a big difference, and they’ve refreshed how we experience the room.

Near the end of January I added a playful touch — I bought a set of patterned heart sheets. Small details like patterned sheets make bedtime and morning routines more fun. Seeing a pattern peek out when you pull back the covers can be a cheerful surprise and can inspire you to make the bed each morning.

That said, I still love plain soft white sheets. They’re versatile, timeless, and require less storage. For many years we kept a simple set of white sheets on our bed by choice — it was an easy way to pare down and simplify. If a minimal approach brings you joy, embrace it. Make choices that work for your space and lifestyle.

When our children were young, I regularly bought them patterned sheets to suit their tastes. It’s an easy, affordable way to refresh a bedroom as kids grow, and changing sheets seasonally — flannel in winter, lightweight cotton in summer — became a fun ritual.

Now that we’re empty nesters, I’ve decided to have fun with patterned sheets for our own bed. Storage is limited in our smaller house since we don’t have a dedicated linen closet, but I made space for the linens I love. Making room for what you love in your home is worth the effort — it’s a simple way to bring joy to everyday life.

Mixing the heart sheets with striped shams, quilts, and throws adds personality and warmth to the room. Those little combinations help the space feel uniquely ours and uplift my mood every time I walk in. With fewer rooms in this house, I’m focusing creative energy on seasonal changes in our bedroom, using mix-and-match bedding to refresh the look without major purchases.

I also keep extra sets of sheets and shams in the dresser and in lidded baskets so rotating options is convenient. Having easy access to different sets makes it simple to switch looks when the mood or the season changes.

Below are some of the patterned sheets and shams I’ve bought recently, along with a few others I think are fun. I’m excited to share more mix-and-match bedding ideas in the coming months.

This month I focused on one room, and it helped my sense of calm at home. For February I’m continuing that focus but shifting to enhancing daily routines — what I call “romanticizing routines.” I explore this idea in my new book A Lovely Life, and next month I’ll share simple ways to make everyday tasks more intentional and joyful.

Will you join me in romanticizing your routines at home in February? I’ll be sharing tips and inspiration for making small, meaningful changes that improve how your home feels and how you experience daily life.
