Adopting a holistic mindset about how we care for our home and the people in it changed everything for my family.
When I learned that many popular household products contain potentially harmful chemicals, I became determined to eliminate them. I discovered that terms like “all natural” can be misleading—greenwashing is common and labels may hide ingredients such as generic “fragrance” that often contain toxins.

Repeated use of conventional products leads to cumulative exposure. We breathe these chemicals and absorb them through our skin, which can affect long-term health.
The supposedly “natural” items I once trusted turned out to be misleading.

Research shows cleaning sprays can impact lung health. Studies tracking long-term use of cleaning products link regular exposure to respiratory decline comparable to substantial smoking habits. This evidence pushed me to change what we use at home.
Living with an autoimmune condition, Hashimoto’s, taught me how everyday products influence wellbeing. That knowledge led us to stop burning scented candles and to be very selective about cleaning and personal care items. I believe we are the gatekeepers of our home, and it’s better to be cautious. When we know better, we can do better.

A few years ago I replaced scented candles and chemical air fresheners with pure essential oils. At first it was hard—I loved candles—but the change made our home healthier. Diffusers that glow or flicker give the same cozy ambiance, and the essential oils smell amazing. It feels spa-like, and filling my diffuser is a favorite daily ritual.
Removing candles also meant no plug-ins, no synthetic room sprays, and no cleaners with hidden “fragrance” ingredients. Many scented products conceal chemicals under vague labels, so we learned to avoid those and to make safer versions at home when needed.

Next, I replaced our cleaning supplies. I used to buy every scented soap and spray, but once those items were gone, I noticed how much cleaner the air smelled and how much better I felt. Now I rely on a single plant-based, toxin-free cleaning concentrate that handles sinks, floors, and bathrooms. It’s affordable, versatile, safe around pets, and effective on plants like my fiddle leaf fig.
I have recipes for cleaning pastes, scrubs, and more using this concentrate. We no longer store a drawer full of harmful products under the sink—just one bottle covers many uses.

We now wash dishes and do laundry with clean, plant-based products—no synthetic fragrances or harsh chemicals on the plates we eat from. The concentrated dish liquid lasts a long time and saves money. The dishwasher soap doubles as a scrub and works wonderfully. With these safer products, cleaning is effective without the need for extreme precautions.

For laundry we avoid chemicals and toxic dryer sheets. Instead we use wool dryer balls and naturally scented oils—simple, effective, and safer for sensitive skin and lungs.

I absolutely love our new hand soap. We no longer use products containing endocrine disruptors. The scents we enjoy now come from pure essential oils—no unnecessary chemicals on our hands or in the air.

I also began swapping skincare products. My skin has responded wonderfully. Since what we put on our skin can enter the body, choosing clean skincare matters.

I replaced conventional makeup with toxin-free alternatives and have seen fewer reactions and better performance. Cleaner formulas have helped eliminate rashes and irritation I once experienced from preservatives in other products.

By removing toxins and using trusted plant-based products, we improved our overall health. We also focused on nutrition, worked with a naturopath, went gluten-free, and added targeted supplements. These combined changes have been dramatic and life-changing.

We cleared out medicine cabinets of unnecessary items and now take a proactive approach to wellness instead of reacting to illness. I follow a holistic plan, and I haven’t been sick with a bug in years. If I do feel unwell, I have natural tools and supplements ready to support my immune system.

Our toxin-free journey has changed so much for the better. From experimenting with essential oils when I first used them during a bout of flu to now, our family’s health has been transformed.
My only regret is not starting sooner.

Most of the products we use come from one trusted company. We receive cleaning concentrates, laundry and dish soaps, skin and hair care, essential oils for sleep and immunity, and supplements for thyroid and gut health—often delivered in a monthly order that makes life easy.
Ordering monthly is optional but convenient. It saves money through rewards, offers product suggestions, and reduces decision fatigue. The subscription box is simple to manage and helps us budget for essentials without leaving home.
