How to Make Scented Pinecones for a Cozy Fall Home

Have you ever bought scented pinecones from the store? I used to buy them every year and loved them until I discovered the synthetic fragrances were making me feel unwell. Scents are powerful and can be wonderful for creating a cozy home, but it’s important to choose non-toxic ingredients. Making your own scented pinecones at home is simple, cost-effective, and a healthier alternative. Below I share the easy method I use.

DIY scented pinecones with non-toxic incredients!

I keep a box of large pinecones I bring out each season, but after a move they were nowhere to be found. If you’re like me and don’t have them on hand, simply take a walk—if you live where pinecones grow they’re easy to forage. Gathering natural décor from the outdoors is satisfying and sustainable. If pinecones aren’t available in your area, you can also buy plain, unscented bags of pinecones ready to scent at home.

Scented pinecones are essentially a simple form of potpourri. They require only a few natural ingredients and are an easy project for beginners. Use a variety of sizes for visual interest or stick to one size for a uniform look. Pinecones are durable and can be reused for many seasons.

My pinecones are small enough to sit in a shallow bowl on a narrow entry table. If you have larger cones, try a basket on the floor or hang a basket from a hook. They also work beautifully in bathrooms—smaller rooms let the scent carry more easily.

I love the natural colors and textures of pinecones. When I make potpourri later I’ll add other botanicals and hues, but I appreciate how simple and organic these scented pinecones look straight from the forest.

Here’s how to make DIY scented pinecones

There are several ways to scent pinecones; this is the method I find easiest and most effective.

  1. Place your pinecones in a large pot and cover them with water.
  2. Add cinnamon sticks and a few drops of your chosen essential oils. Use natural, non-toxic essential oils for a healthier option. Cover the pot with water so the cones are submerged.
  3. Bring the pot to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5–10 minutes.
  4. Turn off the heat and let the pinecones steep in the covered pot for about two hours to soak up the scent.
  5. Remove the pinecones and lay them out on paper towels to dry thoroughly.
  6. For a stronger, longer-lasting fragrance, place dry pinecones in a paper bag or zip-top bag and add 10–20 drops of essential oil inside the bag. Gently shake to distribute the oil, seal, and let them sit for several days. Refresh with additional drops as needed until you reach the desired scent level.

Enjoy—and happy fall!
