How I Picked My New Couch: Top Considerations and Priorities

After doing a lot of research, I finally bought a new couch — actually a loveseat — and we’re really excited about it. I know many of you have been searching for one too, and since deciding can be tricky, I wanted to share my thought process and the sofa we chose in case it helps you.

If you missed the story about why I needed a new sofa, you can read the backstory in the original post.

Here is the couch we chose in a mist performance double stripe fabric.

We had several requirements and preferences that made finding the right sofa a bit more challenging than usual.

Below are the questions and considerations that guided our decision — the factors that mattered most to us:

  • Quality: This is our forever home and the first thing people see when they walk in, so investing in a sofa we’ll love long-term made sense. I prefer durable, well-made furniture. For health reasons, I also hoped for Greenguard certification or similar testing that limits certain chemicals.
  • New or secondhand: I was open to a secondhand find if it met our needs in the short time I had to look. I did spot a lovely one on Facebook Marketplace, but it was too large for our small space. Still, it’s always worth checking local listings.
  • Shopping in person or online: Shopping online was far more convenient for us. It’s riskier than seeing pieces in person, so I read reviews carefully, favored brands I’d used before, and scrutinized every detail — dimensions, fabrics, and finishes — to set realistic expectations.
  • Size: The loveseat had to be 61 inches wide so we could comfortably walk around it in our limited space. That specific size isn’t common, and anything larger would have overwhelmed the room.

  • Focal point or supporting role: Some couches work well against a wall as a supporting element, but ours floats in the center of the main floor and therefore acts as a focal point. That made the style and silhouette even more important.
  • Style and shape: Because it’s visible from all sides, I wanted a sofa with an interesting but classic shape and exposed legs. That keeps the piece from feeling like a visual barrier in the middle of the room and makes it feel lighter and more intentional.
  • Fabric and color: The sofa needed to coordinate with our freshly painted walls. While I’ve loved neutral and white sofas before, for this beach house I favored a soft stripe that feels summery and relaxed. In cooler months I’ll layer cozy textures and warmer colors for a different mood. Durability was also important — we have dogs and young visitors sometimes — so I chose a performance fabric that’s fairly easy to care for. Slipcovers are an option down the road, but they weren’t a deal breaker.

  • Cushion styles: There are many cushion options — down-filled, foam, removable, reversible, bench seat or multiple cushions — and each has trade-offs. Down-filled cushions are very comfortable but need regular fluffing; bench cushions offer a sleek look and fewer gaps where pets can get in trouble. We chose a bench-style seat with down filling because we like the sink-in comfort and the clean appearance it provides.
  • Price: High-quality, customizable sofas can be expensive, so it’s worth being certain you love the piece before buying. I found several options under $3,000, but once I factored in the exact size, style, and customizations I wanted, the price rose. Choosing a smaller sofa rather than a sectional helped keep costs down, and I had a trade discount that allowed some additional flexibility with the budget.

I can’t wait for the loveseat to arrive, though the lead time is long. In the meantime I’m enjoying thinking through the rest of the room and experimenting with mood boards for seasonal styling. I’ll share those ideas soon.

I’ll also do a roundup of the other sofas I considered — there were several strong contenders.
