When we lived in our old house and I had just started this blog, my son Luke had just turned seven. He was so small then; I still can’t believe how much he’s grown and how he’s changed over the years.

If you’ve followed the blog from the beginning, you might remember him from the now-famous messy hall post — the little guy wearing underwear on his head. Those days feel both distant and fond now.

But he’s not seven anymore.
He still has the same handsome face and that curly hair, but he’s grown taller than his sisters and even taller than me.

He’s thirteen now.
Thankfully, the underwear-on-the-head phase is over.

In our previous home he had to live with a swine-pink wall color for years—poor kid. We finally repainted his room a year or two ago, but the color never really clicked with him and we never finished updating the space. I don’t have many pictures of that stage because it wasn’t something we were proud of.

For a long time he slept in bunk beds at the beach house. They were perfect for sleepovers and saved floor space when he was younger, but as he’s gotten taller they became uncomfortable. His room also had a tiny desk and an old dresser that used to belong to one of his sisters, so the space never really felt like his own.
Since he turned thirteen, I’ve wanted to create something special for him: a room that reflects who he is at this age, a space he’ll enjoy and remember from his teen years.
His room is very small, so we didn’t have much to work with. His two main requests were simple: a full-sized bed and a proper desk. Those priorities helped shape the design and kept the plan realistic for the limited footprint.
Above you can see the inspiration collage we used to guide the makeover. We’ve started working on the room and are excited to share the progress.
Disclosure: *Luke’s new bed, shown in the inspiration collage above, was provided by Overstock.com as part of a room makeover challenge. We were not paid in any other way; all design choices and opinions are our own.
Next week I’ll share photos of the room so far, so you can see the changes we’ve made.
