Charming Organized Laundry Closet: Smart Space-Saving Ideas

Ever since my daughter Courtney moved into her new place last year, we’ve talked about how much nicer her laundry area could be with a few smart additions. Though her laundry “room” is really just a small closet with louvered doors, she’s fortunate to have an in-unit washer and dryer—so we wanted to make the most of the space.

One afternoon we decided to tackle the project. We made a quick trip to HomeGoods and picked up a few key pieces: two art canvases, a compact rug, a wall rack, and some hanging shoe pockets to keep laundry supplies organized. We combined those finds with a few items we already had at home and planned the layout so everything would be accessible yet tidy.

Setting up the closet was quick and straightforward. We hung the artwork, installed the wall rack for frequently used items, slipped the hanging pockets into place for detergents and stain treatments, and added the rug to warm up the floor. The transformation was finished before dinner—simple, effective, and budget-friendly.

I believe in keeping projects small and manageable so you can make progress without feeling overwhelmed. If you’re facing a larger room, break it into smaller tasks you can complete in one session. Little wins add up and create momentum, making it easier to maintain the space afterward.

When my kids were small, we had laundry in a closet in two of our homes. At the time I thought the only way to keep it neat was to do laundry every day—an unappealing idea. I used to shove dirty clothes into that closet and ignore it. Eventually I learned that doing the laundry regularly reduced stress and saved time overall. A little routine goes a long way.

Do you have a small space you could organize and beautify this week?

This laundry closet is an example of how thoughtful organization and a few decorative touches can turn a functional but forgotten area into a pleasant, useful space. Small upgrades—like storage pouches, hooks, and artwork—make a room feel cared for and encourage consistent habits.
