One-Month Bathroom Makeover: Transform Your Space in 30 Days

I’m back with a quick progress update on our basement bathroom makeover. As I mentioned last week, we committed to a “makeover in a month,” but because we started a week late it’s really turned into a three-week sprint. The goal is to make this bathroom feel like it belongs with the rest of our home—cleaner, fresher, and a little coastal in style.

Note: these are real-time progress photos taken at dusk with the lights on, so they show the room mid-project. Stick with me to see the full vision!

This week my husband painted the walls and Courtney applied the first coat of paint to the vanity. I mostly supervised. The walls were a dingy off-white from before we moved in; a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore Simply White brightened the space and created a neutral base for the stencil design we plan to add. The stencil will give the room a fun, updated look without a major remodel.

The existing vanity wasn’t my style, but I wanted to transform it into something that looks like an old painted cabinet repurposed as a sink base. We used Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Bergere, and it’s already giving the piece a fresh, lived-in look. Since we aren’t replacing the granite countertop, we pulled colors from the stone—vanity, wall, and future faucet finishes—to create a cohesive palette for the room.

I already love the updated vanity, even though we haven’t finished painting or added hardware yet. Once we install the new faucets and add finishing touches like the wall lights, towel bars, mirrors, and accessories, the space will feel cozy and polished.

If you missed the “before,” here’s how the bathroom looked just a few days ago.

And here’s our current progress. Remaining tasks include painting the stencil, finishing and sealing the vanity paint, installing the faucets, mounting the new lights, swapping in towel rods and mirrors, and styling with accessories.

We’ll share another progress report next Friday and include a detailed post about painting the vanity later on.
