At first glance, hanging oars or paddles in an X shape on the wall sounds simple. After trying it, though, you discover it takes a little planning to make them sit just right. I found an easy method that requires no visible hardware—no brackets, hooks, or exposed screws—so I’ll explain how I mounted my flea market paddles in an X configuration.
First, I call them paddles rather than oars because my Instagram followers thought they looked more like old butter or cheese paddles. Regardless of the name, the same approach works for either.

To start, I attached the first paddle directly to the wall using two Command Strips, which act like a strong Velcro-style adhesive. I’ve used Command Strips to hang oars and other lightweight decor before and they’ve held up well without slipping.
For the second paddle, I nailed a small block of wood to the wall where the two paddles would cross. The block provides a stable surface to overlap the second paddle. I secured the second paddle to that block with a Command Strip, which keeps the paddle flush and steady. To anchor the handle end of the second paddle, I drove a single nail through the paddle’s existing hole into the wall. That small nail prevents any movement. I had planned to paint the block to match the wall but it’s nearly invisible once the paddles are in place, so I never bothered.

The paddles add a lot of character to the family room and give a collected, vintage feel. When I eventually add built-ins on either side of the fireplace they’ll probably move, but for now they’re a simple, low-cost focal point.
