Have you always wanted wall sconces but don’t have wiring or nearby outlets? Hate the look of lamp cords running across counters or dangling off furniture? I have a simple, clever solution to share.

We’ve been doing a few simple updates in my lower-level home office, and I wanted to share an idea we used in that space. These photos are progress shots, so please excuse the imperfect lighting and unfinished details, but I thought the step itself might be useful even before the room is complete. Finished rooms are fun, but there are many steps along the way.

Our main floor is about 1,500 square feet, and I love the basement for quieter, designated areas to write, create, and hold small meetings. One larger room is perfect for spreading out and hosting Zoom calls. I started a makeover by adding curtain panels, painting the walls and staircase, rearranging furniture, and planning a few new pieces to finish the space. I’m also working on better organization.

After several busy years of book projects, I’m excited to shift focus back to home projects and organization. We have many ideas in mind, and I’ll be sharing those updates here as they progress.

I painted a large wall in the room Hale Navy, the same rich blue I used in my previous office. It reads moody and cozy in the evenings, but bright and happy in daylight. Hale Navy pairs beautifully with white and other lighter accents, giving a strong contrast that feels both dramatic and welcoming.

I’ll share more about the room, the paint, and other updates soon, but I wanted to show this idea in case you’re looking for the same solution I was.

I wanted more mood lighting in the office, but a room can easily become cluttered with too many table lamps. Lamps take up valuable surface space, and their cords can be visually distracting. Ceiling lights are useful, but they don’t replace the warm, layered light that makes evenings and winter days comfortable for me.

Rechargeable warm lightbulbs are a great no-wiring option

I searched for wall sconces to add character above a console, but I didn’t want to hardwire anything since this might be a temporary set-up. Plug-in sconces were an option but many projects looked too bulky and hung far from the wall, and their cords running down the wall weren’t ideal. Battery puck lights under cabinets often give off a cool light I don’t like; I prefer warm, cozy tones.

Then I discovered warm rechargeable lightbulbs and realized they were the perfect solution. We mounted slim wall sconces with screws and left the wiring unconnected for now. Instead of wiring or using visible cords, we simply install rechargeable bulbs into the sconce sockets. When the bulbs need power, they’re removed and recharged—no permanent wiring required.

The rechargeable bulbs make all the difference. They provide warm, mood-enhancing light without batteries or visible cords. I placed them in the gold sconces on this wall and they instantly made the space feel cozier. I also purchased a set in black for another area where wiring isn’t an option and will share those photos when they’re installed.

Gold sconces with rechargeable bulbs look finished and refined

The bulbs are rechargeable, so you don’t need to keep replacing disposable batteries. They typically run for about five hours, which is ideal for evening mood lighting. To recharge them I use a simple corded lamp or socket in my office. It’s easy to swap one bulb out while another charges, so I always have a ready-to-use bulb available.

Charging might sound inconvenient, but in practice it’s not difficult. For peace of mind, I keep at least two bulbs so one can charge while the other is in use. You could also recharge them in any lamp or socket you have nearby.

We might hardwire these sconces later, but for now this solution gives the look and warmth I wanted without permanent installation. It’s especially great for renters or for adding a lamp in the middle of a room or on a counter where running an extension cord would be awkward.

This approach is a simple, effective way to change a room’s mood instantly. Rechargeable bulbs offer many creative uses to bring warmth and ambiance to different parts of your home. I also like using battery-operated candles in sconces to add a soft glow when wiring isn’t practical.

Show us if you try these rechargeable bulbs! How do you use them in your home to create a cozier atmosphere? You can tag me on social media or share in the TIR community group if you’d like to show your setup.
