Do you still set up a special kids’ table for holiday meals? I have fond memories of sitting at the kids’ table during family gatherings — it always felt like a mini-reunion with cousins, full of laughter and lively conversation. Even if today’s families are smaller or children sit at the main table, creating a special spot for kids makes the meal more memorable.

My son doesn’t have as many cousins, so our kids’ table tends to be smaller now. Still, I love the idea of giving children something tailored to them—whether they’re clustered together or seated at the family table. I looked for creative, simple ideas online and collected a few favorites that are easy to recreate.

Tablecloths and Placemats

Use paper tablecloths or paper placemats so kids can draw, doodle, or write down things they are thankful for during the meal. This turns the surface into an activity area and encourages creativity without worrying about spills.

Centerpieces

Centerpieces for kids don’t need to be formal. Choose playful, whimsical designs—vegetables decorated with faces, small candy turkeys, or other humorous arrangements—that invite smiles and conversation. These lighthearted touches keep the mood relaxed and fun.

Placecards

Have children help make their own placecards. A simple craft session before the meal keeps kids engaged while adults finish cooking, and personalized placecards give each child a sense of ownership at the table.

Party Favors

Small party favors, like tiny finger puppets on candy sticks, make great distractions and entertainment for kids while adults linger over conversation. Choose simple, inexpensive items that match the holiday theme and are easy for children to enjoy at the table.
