You know what I love about fall? Nesting. It’s the season for making home cozy and welcoming, especially when I’m hosting small, low-key gatherings. I don’t fuss over formal party etiquette — sometimes we pass food the “wrong” way or set glasses on the opposite side — but the result is always a relaxed, enjoyable time with friends and family.
I enjoy arranging the house, planning simple touches, and creating spaces where guests can feel comfortable, linger and get to know each other.

Putting together a meaningful, welcoming gathering makes opening our doors even more fun. This year I’ve been busy with book work, but I still plan to host a few more get-togethers. Every time I do, I’m glad I made the effort.

One of our favorite seasonal treats is mulled cranberry apple cider — it’s comforting, delicious, and makes the house smell amazing. I like bringing out tried-and-true seasonal recipes; for example, my pumpkin squares are wonderful and equally tasty when baked in a loaf pan. Small food traditions like these add to the warmth of the season.

Last year we added pops of red to our decor and it felt so festive. This season I’m trying different color ideas for the dining room, and I’m excited to see how the new arrangements and fresh touches will come together after several furniture swaps and room updates we made this year.

I also enjoy planning the serving pieces and table settings. Recently I set up a small hospitality cabinet in the dining room so we’re better prepared for holiday tables. It makes it easier to set a pretty table quickly — we’re still tweaking the decor above it and repositioning the mirror, but it’s coming along.
This week we’ll give our old dining table a fresh coat of white paint so it will look clean and ready for whatever celebration we host. It’s a small refresh I’ve been meaning to do for a couple of years, and I can’t wait to see the difference.

Those pre-holiday rituals are some of my favorite parts of the season: tidying the house, arranging dishes, and adding a few fresh decorative touches. Nesting and fluffing up the home helps us feel ready to welcome friends and family and to celebrate the reason for the season.
Beyond decor and traditions, I love the small comforts — candles glowing, music playing, and good food to share.

I keep several multi-purpose serving and decor pieces that become go-to favorites for entertaining year-round. I don’t have a large collection of holiday-specific dishes because storage is limited, but a few seasonal plates or accent pieces are fun to use when the mood calls for them.
Many readers asked about the white wood tray displayed in our entry with plush pumpkins — it’s a versatile piece I use throughout the year because it organizes and elevates whatever I place on it. Paired with chunky white candlesticks, it creates an inviting vignette that translates well across seasons.

The hand-blown glass lanterns, a chalkboard tray, and the ruffled-edge dishes I use on open kitchen shelves are among my favorite versatile items. They work well for everyday use and for special gatherings, and I move the lanterns around the house depending on the display I want.

Glass lanterns are especially lovely because they can be styled in multiple ways — with pillar candles, floating candles in water, or a base of pebbles for texture. Changing the fill and candle style instantly refreshes the look.

Because I’ve collected several items from Mary & Martha and readers often ask about them, I shared a surprise giveaway featuring a tray, a set of mugs with a tray, and a medium hand-blown glass lantern as a special thank-you. It was fun to highlight pieces that make entertaining feel effortless and meaningful.

I love the variety of pretty, functional pieces that help create welcoming spaces. Whether you’re arranging a cozy corner or setting a table for friends, simple, versatile items make it easier to host with calm confidence and personal style.
