Moving Into Our Second Home: First Day Highlights

We’re a day behind on posting because our home internet wasn’t set up until late yesterday, but here’s a look at our first full day in the house on Tuesday. Boxes were scattered through every room—goodbye clean slate, hello chaos. Nothing is permanently placed yet; we just dropped furniture and boxes around to get settled and will live with things a bit before committing to final locations.

To rewind briefly: the last time we moved we went from NYC to Richmond in a minivan. Technically we moved one more time three months later, but we borrowed a small trailer and transferred everything that way. The point is we weren’t used to moving with more than a few boxes each. Moving is not fun—full stop. That said, we’re gradually making progress and starting to get organized. We can find socks and underwear again, and we’ve even showered!

We expect to be mostly unpacked by tomorrow, though we’ve been taking frequent breaks for picture-taking, tending to Clara, changing our address, and answering comments between bursts of unpacking. After that we’ll tackle projects like painting, hanging art, removing or replacing fixtures, planning furniture layouts, and installing window treatments. What we work on first will depend on our mood and what supplies are available.

For big projects we like to save and plan carefully, but for small changes we recommend jumping right in. Live with the house a bit before making anything dramatic you might regret. We often hang frames or place furniture to test a layout, then move things if they don’t feel right. The same goes for paint colors—try it, live with it, and adjust if needed. We’ll share photos and details as projects progress.

On with the just-moved-in photos:

Hall bath (currently mid-installation of a diaper sprayer):

Clara’s room—rebuilding the crib and getting the essentials in place was a priority so she could adjust quickly, which seems to be working so far:

Future playroom/kids’ room (we had to disassemble the daybed to get it down the hall):

Master bedroom—our old bed frame didn’t convey with the house, so we’re sleeping on the floor until we build or buy a new one. We’ll see what we end up with:

Master bath sink area—we need to raise the tension rod to fit our extra-long curtain soon:

No idea why Burger is in that photo—maybe he’s taking an interest in the hardwood floors and trim. Here’s the sunroom:

Laundry/mudroom:

We also have a separate basement entry (this one is under our bedroom instead of the sunroom). It will be great for storing tools, bikes, the lawnmower, seasonal decor, baby gear, and maternity clothes.

That’s the house for now. We can’t wait to unpack more and share photos as each room comes together and projects begin. Off to unpack another round of boxes…

Psst—here’s a floor plan to help make sense of the layout (we swapped Clara’s bedroom and the playroom so the smallest room could serve as the nursery).

Pssst #2—We’ve announced the winners of this week’s giveaway.
